Since january 2018 the Movement against Violence – vzw Zijn started with the European project EQUI-X. We started working with the evidence based program H|M|D of Promundo and develop and test a Flemish version. Central to the program are the workshops on gender (with a focus on masculinity), diversity and violence. Through intensive workshops we try to stimulate young people (aged 15years tot 21years) in their critical reflection on these topics to ultimately attain violence prevention and the promotion of gender equality.
After a meeting with our European partners in Croatia mid may where we learned all about program Y of Status M we started working intensively in Belgium with the modules of this program. We subtracted the modules on gender, violence, relationships, drugs and alcohol, sexuality, … who proved to be the most interesting in the Belgian context and elaborated or even added modules on discrimination and cyberbullying that were insufficiently included in the program. We ended up with a Belgian Program with manual for 20 workshops. Schools that wish to participate can, to a certain degree, choose the accents they want to highlight during the program
In June the program was presented on a focusgroup to a panel of experts. We received quite a lot of feedback on the content of the program as well as on what would work when you deal with young men and women within a school context. The members of the focus group were experts on gender, violence, addiction, etc on the one hand and experts in the field of working with young people within or outside a school context on the other hand
The program was adjusted based on these remarks and proposed and executed in a three day training of the trainers who will work with this program. The manual was even adjusted once more on the basis of the remarks, thoughts and ideas of the trainers. They also have a combined expertise in working with youth on the topics we wish to address
The program will be executed in 6 schools with boys and girls between the ages of 15 and 18 of the general, technical and professional education. Before it is executed we will test the program in two different schools met several young people. The first test takes place in September, the second in November.
From January 2019 we really go to work with the young people themselves. We follow an intensive process of approximately 18 hours and hope to facilitate a change in attitude and behavior towards the rigid gender norms they might suffer or live by
Thanks to our collaboration with the Centre of Social and Cultural Psychology of the KULeuven, we will be able to measure the impact of the program quite accurately and in doing so we will ensure the evidence based character of the program in Belgium. The young men and women in the program will reply to a questionnaire before and after the workshops. We will do the same with a control group outside of the program.
